Asaba International Airport: What is the delay?

Delta State Deputy Governor, Prof Amos Utuama (SAN) has said that the non-completion of the Asaba International Airport as earlier proposed was not as a result of delay, but due to improvement of facilities to enable it function as both cargo and passenger airport.

Prof Utuama disclosed this while inspecting the airport in company of the Director, in charge of the airport, Mr. Austin Ayemidejor, and the Chairman of ULO Consultants, Chief Uche Okpuno who conducted the deputy governor round the project.

The Deputy Governor noted that the Asaba International Airport when completed is expected to compare favorably with any other airport of its capacity as the runway has been expanded to accommodate three arriving or departing planes simultaneously.

Prof Utuama emphasized that the changes were positive as it served the purpose of perfecting the project and meeting the demands of the Aviation Regulatory Authority and other International stakeholders in aviation industry.

Commenting on the job so far, the Chairman of ULO Consultants, Chief Uche Okpuno, pointed out that there is need for the increase of runway, the concuss, arrival, departure to meet the international standard of modern airports.

Chief Okpuno revealed that the project requires about N20 billion to complete adding that the initial cost of N7 billion was estimated before the State Governor’s visit and demanded that the Airport should be up graded to international standard. He said about 75 per cent of the job has been completed.

While commending the State Government for meeting up with their financial obligations in the project, the ULO Chairman stated that they are doing everything possible to deliver a standard airport and to deliver it before the end of this year.

  1. I am not suprise. Isn’t this the way Nigeria works. They make big promises but at the end of the day. It is the same lousy country. That will never change.

    1. it is the same fraud ibori started still going on.i wish gov. uduaghan would see that this project holds the key between being the gretest delta gov. or its greatest thief. i would complete the airport and recieve the accompaning political dividends. than play politics and be hounded like a thief by efcc later in life. nigerian politicians have no concience and are in many respects unintelligent.

  2. Please, I just want the airport complete cos dats d only way I can come home now that they’ve closed down Enugu Airport. I’m a student schooling in University of Lagos.

  3. Truely, the delay of Asaba Airport is not encouraging however, expanding the Airport to the international standard is welcome but, qualitative is absolutely essential no matter the amount that rest in peace on the project.
Only God know’s when the Stadium will be completed.

    We are watching!!!!

  7. The delay in the completion of the airport is becoming embrassing. Nigerian politicians made laudable promises but achieve less. Uduaghan will engrave his name on the marble if he completes the airport in good time. We are all looking forward to it.

  8. my fellow deltans, looking at the structure and size of the airport, And when compared with the amount of money budgeted for the said project, you will agree with me that there is a fowl game, what i have seen so far is just a three bed room flat on ground with a big gate, and an open land mass, underneat the land mass lies the lumps of lateritic soil, covered with low quality asphalt, the said airport is not even as big as the shoping mall located in pearson airport canada and there is nothing classic about it, ,The airport dont have to be massive, but classic, like the kind of houses they built and buy for themselves, in the western world,Deltans is high time u call a spade a spade, if we dont fight for our right now it will be too late, its thier duty to things in place, that was the reason we cast our vote for them, its not a privilage, Social aminity and infracstructural development is our right they have enriched thier pockets enough, And even have reserves for thier next generation yet unborn, we want to see a functional airport, we are tired of stories and paper work, lets be practical this time. AGU OFUOBI.

  10. Expanding d runway is a welcome idea i wonder where dey went when d project started its 70% completed n dey say we nid to expand d runway another way to loot again.

  11. why is uduaghan punishing the people of delta state
why is uche okpunor involved in tearing his own home town apart.ibori is an example of big time fraud, asaba airport is lavishing away by some criminals who called themselves deltans

  12. friends lets us thanks this governors for puting in their very best is only a step to the reality. when the time comes things will take shape

  13. Dear, people of delta state i only have, one advice for everybody that is involved, in the so called airport run way project. i may say, that this is the second runway project,on the same airport.it is indeed a big shame. well my advice to you all, that are involved in this so called project, or rather construction, should be ready to face the people of delta state and the very big one. THE EFCC. You people will never change, you are all enemies of progress.

  14. it is not a new thing to we Nigerians we have heard that millions and one times they are all robbers with pen the governor and those that is following him, gov Uduaghan have won the election so that he can complete the stealing process

  15. I believe that all the commentaries regarding our proposed Asaba Airport are well intentioned. I also believe that the authors of these commentaries, like my self have the best interests of our state at heart. I therefore share their frustration and disappointment. I shall therefore syggest that rather than the ceaseless pointing of accusing fingers that we dwell more on what we can do quicken the rate of progress at the Asaba Airport. We can do this by peace ful demonstrations, writing of letters to our politicians and volunteering our services and resources to the development of the Airport. Our governor should be reminded on a continous basis the obvious socio-economic contributions an operational International airport in Asaba can make in the lives of Nigerians not just Deltans who live both in the country and in foreign lands. These contributions include: a rise in the hotel and hospitality industry, increased demand in transportion to and from the state, an attraction of more tourists, less demand on the use of the pathetic and terrifying Lagos Onitsha Road,an attraction of local and foreign businesses and increased motivation for our sons and daughters who are residing in foreign lands to visit home more frequently. All these activities translate to the increase of jobs and revenue to both our people and our Government. My guess is that our Governor and politicians share these views and would like to leave a legacy that commomorates their legacies for eternity. So fellow Deltans lets resort to the effective use of the power of the pen and peaceful deonstrations and not name-calling in trying not just to complete the Asaba International Airport but its hubs attract foreign airlines. Lets make it the busiest airport in Nigeria. If Atlanta Airport can overtake the airports in New York and Chicago; Asaba International Airport, with the proper and sincere focus, will in the foreseeable future become the airport of choice in our country. Imagine the number of jobs this will create and the dampning effect this will have on crime in our beloved state. We can do it so lets get into the treanches. God bless Delta State, God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

  16. is’t true that flight is already landed in Asaba airport for the first time? and can you guys tell me who approve the airport to be international and what year the airport is an international airport?……..?

  17. incredible that we are still talking about asaba int’l airport today…my real worry is that there is no drainnage in all the roads @ asaba….ommission or commission???

  18. I commend the delta state government for initiating such a life changing project and for the level attained so far. we Nigerians abroad are seriously waiting for the completion of the prject and we plead with the government to facilitate the work process so tha the project will be completed soon.

  19. We are all delighted at the begining of this Asaba airport project but now people are tired of waiting for the completion of the airport. The government should see that this wonderful project is completed soon for the benefit of all.

And he was turned away from the bank when he tried to get money with his credit card. was told because he did not live in Africa he had to open an account there before they would let him draw money out. He is there working for your country and you treat him this way.
    I am completely disappointed .
