Delta low cost civil servants’ housing estate gulps N614.9m

The 150 housing units under construction by the Delta State Government for civil servants will be ready within the next six weeks, Commission for Housing, Paulinus Akpeki has assured.

The housing units comprising of 50 one bedroom apartments, 50 two bedroom apartments and 50 three bedroom apartments is being executed at the cost of N614.9 million. It is located between Asaba and Ibusa on the Asaba-Ughelli expressway.

Conducting officials of the Federal Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development round the project site, Akpeki further gave a breakdown of the construction cost as N2,814,107.04 per unit for the one bedroom, N4,521,089.69 per unit for the two bedroom and  N4,963,032,64 per unit for the three bedroom apartments.

Akpeki said the project was conceptualized for the benefit of civil

servants across the state, adding that it will be based on owner-occupier basis.

According to him, the houses would be sold at N3,095,517.77 each for the one bedroom apartments, N4,973,198.66 each for the two bedroom apartments and N5,459,335.91 each for the three bedroom apartments.

He said the contract for the project was awarded over six months but for the delay in the release of mobilization funds, construction started two months ago.

Leader of the Federal Government delegation, Architect Suara Akinola, expressed satisfaction at the project which is at the roofing stage and commended the state government for embarking on the project.

Akinola described the selling price as highly subsidized saying that a

similar three bedroom apartments constructed by the Federal Government were sold at N7.2 million.

“So, this is highly subsidized for civil servants. This programme is a very laudable one which generation yet unborn will benefit from if it continues and they will show appreciation.

“I implore the state government to make the project a continuous one by making it to be a kind of seed money for the housing ministry and give them a target of producing at least 200 housing units every year.

At least, when the beneficiaries of this first phase pay back, it would be rolled back into the scheme,” he advised.
